Strategy’s new execution mandate

In the current environment, firms are facing some of the largest challenges of the past 20 years due to digital disruption and market uncertainty. Gartner has released a new report entitled: Strategy’s New Execution Mandate.

In the report, three challenges are highlighted:

  • More complex, firmwide initiatives – hard to know the  impact of interconnected changes and growing array of firmwide initiatives makes coordination difficult
  • More distributed decision making – more decision makers can introduce misalignment and it makes it harder to pinpoint the source of execution failures
  • More uncertain environment – which calls plans into question and means there is no single source of the truth

Gartner’s conclusion is that strategists must adopt new approaches to secure alignment in a number of areas to address these issues. In particular, they advocate more focus is needed on cross-silo understanding upfront in the process; in-flight decision support during execution; and the creation of processes that can periodically determine whether realignment is needed.  The report also suggests that it is the strategy function that is key to ensuring manager alignment once strategy execution is under way.
